Berwald and Atterberg

Berwald’s first opera about love and jealousy in Castile, Spain, was well received when it premiered in 1862, and is reminiscent of both Bizet and Tchaikovsky. A piece of Swedish music history by Franz Berwald who died 150 years ago this year. Cellist Jakob Koranyi has been praised for his sensitivity and elegance; characteristics that stand him in good stead when performing Atterberg’s Cello Concerto in C minor. Seductive harmonies, grandiose melodies and intimate moments are interwoven in a splendid, enjoyable repertoire piece. Dvořák’s Symphony No. 6, an appetising blend of Czech and German romanticism, brings the concert – led by Jamie Martín, known in Sweden as the principal conductor of the Gävle Symphony Orchestra – to a close.
